Heroic rescue: Rottweiler mother and puppies saved from the Park Fire

In a story of courage and dedication, a member of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (BCSO SAR) team went above and beyond to save a mother Rottweiler and her four puppies from the devastating Park Fire near Campbellville, California. Their heroic efforts have been recognized by the American Rottweiler Club, who are honoring the rescuers with the ARC Heroism Award.

A race against time

The Park Fire, which swept through the remote area near Cohasset and Campbellville, forced the evacuation of numerous residents. During these evacuations on July 24, 2024, an evacuee’s truck became disabled, stranding two adult Rottweilers and their litter of puppies. The owner informed first responders of the truck’s location, but the area was not immediately accessible due to the fire’s spread and treacherous conditions.

Days later, on July 27, BCSO SAR member Trevor Skaggs was flown into the area by pilot Conner Smith. Once on the ground, Skaggs ran 1.5 miles through difficult terrain to reach the stranded animals. Upon arrival, he found the mother and her puppies alive, though in dire need of food and water. Sadly, the father Rottweiler had not survived the ordeal.

After offering the mother and puppies water and a portion of his protein bar, Skaggs carefully led them back through the rugged terrain to the waiting helicopter. The dogs were then airlifted to safety at the Chico Airport and are now under the care of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group.
