New CHIC Requirements

Sent: Friday, August 14, 2009 8:31 PM

Good Evening,

My name is Jeff Shaver, President of the American Rottweiler Club. I am writing on behalf of the Board of Directors.

It has come to our attention that the CHIC webpage shows that for a CHIC number, PennHIP, OVC and GDC are accepted for hips and for elbows, GDC and OVC.

The ARC, to our knowledge, has never authorized any of these entities to be used for CHIC. Our mandatory practices have always allowed only OFA for hips and elbows. If we are mistaken, please let me know. It is our understanding that the parent club has the right to determine which entities may be accepted for that breed for purposes of CHIC.

Please notify me in writing, and provide any documentation you have where the ARC, as parent club for the Rottweiler in the United States, has ever authorized GDC, OVC or PennHIP to be used for Rottweilers.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter,

Jeff Shaver
President, ARC

Jeff,

The requirements are easy enough for us to change. To clarify, you would like us to remove OVC, GDC, and PennHIP as acceptable test for hips and elbows, correct?

Regarding ARC authorization and documentation, the CHIC program began is in 2000 and Rotts were one of the pilot breeds. The CHIC requirements for Rotts were established before I started with the OFA in 2001 and really kicked the program off. I don’t have access to communications or documentation regarding establishment of the requirements, however; neither the OFA nor the CHF would have arbitrarily set those requirements, and there are other pilot breeds that limited hips and elbows to OFA results, so I’m guessing the input did come from ARC.

Either way, its probably not overly productive to try and find blame or finger point, the change is easily made. Again, please just confirm you would like hips and elbows to be limited to OFA evaluations.

Mr. Dziuk,

The following motion was just passed by affirmative vote of all officers and directors of the American Rottweiler Club, with one "did not vote". This is to be effective immediately. We are not asking for revocation of any CHIC numbers already assigned, though the ARC never approved using any organizations other than those noted in the motion.

Please advise when these changes have been made official on your web pages and in official written policy changes for new CHIC number applications.

Motion: To change the requirements for CHIC to be OFA only for hips, elbows, hearts and only CERF for eyes, to be effective from passage of this motion going forward.
Motion: Marilyn Piusz; Second Jeff Shaver. Question Called by Jeff Shaver.

Thanks for your help in this matter,

Jeff Shaver
President, ARC

Changes made.

The Rott page on the CHIC website updated: http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/brdreqs.html?breed=RO.

The next time we qualify dogs for CHIC, only those meeting the current criteria will qualify and be issued numbers.

Thanks,
Eddie
