by the members in attendance at the Annual Meeting, motion to reword
the current Top 10 calculations in performance events from 'the dog
must place in a class, then 1 point is counted for each dog defeated
in the class' to 'the dog must place in a class, then 1 point is counted
for each dog defeated in the class plus 1" to become effective
for the 2010 Top 10 calculations." Approval of this motion to rescind,
will mean that the wording will revert back to the calculation wording
previously in place: "the dog must place in a class, then 1 point
is counted for each dog defeated in the class".
MOTION: Janet I. Fletcher; SECOND:
Marilyn E. Piusz
APPROVE: JS, JF, LB, JG, MP, JR, SL; DISAPPROVE:
AG, LOC
PASSED 10/27/09
Note The Board rescinded the motion regarding this change to how the Top Ten points are calculated for two reasons:
- Currently it is very simple. If a dog takes a 3rd place, you just subtract 3 from the total in the class and come up with the points. It may seem like no big deal to start adding 1 point to this each time. But the Statisticians deal with hundreds of dogs and we feel the addition of this step will make it easier to make an error in the points.
- These are the Top 10 Awards. They are supposed to be for the dogs that have defeated the most in that venue. If we award a dog a Top 10 Award because he has 3 points, earned by placing when he is the only dog competing it just cheapens every other award. Below are two different scenarios; both under current method and under the method rescinded:
Example #1
Current Method
Rescinded Method
Dog #1
Placed in 2 trials defeating total of 15 dogs15 pts (10th place)
17 pts (11th place – no award)
Dog #2
Placed in 9 trials defeating total of 10 dogs 10 pts
(Actually only placed in 2 trials where he
defeated the other dogs; the other 7 trials
were where he was the only dog in his class
and qualified so was awarded a 1st place.)(11th place – no award)
19 pts (10th place)
It does not make sense to award the dog who only defeated 10 other dogs over the one who defeated 15 dogs, just because he was in more trials and received these additional points for “defeating” himself.
Example #2
Current Method
Rescinded Method
Dog #1
Placed in 1 trial defeating a total 1 dogs1 pt (1st place)
2 pts (2nd place)
Dog #2
Placed in 3 trials defeating no other dogs
(At all 3 trials he was the only dog in his class
and qualified so was awarded a 1st place.)0 pts (no award)
3 pts (1st place)
This is an example from a venue where there are not many dogs competing, e.g. Carting Excellent. And again it just does not make sense that a dog who never defeated another dog should rank above one who has.

AKC will send data regarding the number of litters/puppies produced
by Production Award qualifiers to Marilyn Piusz. She has signed a confidentiality
agreement not to release this information until the dog owner’s consent
is obtained. If the owner’s consent is obtained the data will be made
available at the time of the award presentation, as well as published
in the ARK and on the ARC website. If no consent is obtained, a notation
will be made next to the dog’s name to that effect, and the data will
be destroyed.
Dogs/bitches who already have a Production Award, but are not
eligible for the next level or are already a Gold Producer, are able
to update the accomplishments of their offspring and their point total.
There will be no new certificate issued, but the changes will be made
on the master Production List that is posted on the ARC website. All
requirements stated above apply to Production Award updates as well.
The number of litters/puppies must also be updated. AKC charges ARC
for this report so anyone wishing to update information must pay a service
charge of $10.00 per dog/bitch. The ARC Board will review the service
charge any time there is a change to the AKC charge.
