MESSAGE FROM THE ARC PRESIDENT

Dear American Rottweiler Club Members:

As some of you may have seen in the news, hurricane season is back. With several tropical depressions forming in the Atlantic and Gulf areas, the American Rottweiler Club Disaster Committee is back on notice and communicating with members and volunteers to prepare. This applies equally to the wildfire situation in California. If anyone is interested in volunteering or becoming involved in any of these efforts, at least in the preparatory stages, please contact Ann Glynn.

The American Rottweiler Club’s first legal intern, Juan Michelen, has just completed his summer internship program with the Club. His final report and letter to the American Rottweiler Club is available on the website. In all likelihood the American Rottweiler Club will continue using Juan as an intern during the school year, during which time he will be working for school credits as opposed to intern fees. Juan has performed a valuable service for us in helping to organize information relative to the AVMA dock/crop position on a state-by-state basis. Additionally, he has gathered all legal decisions published in the country regarding breed-specific legislation and prepared an analysis of the arguments in those decisions, for the success or failure of the efforts made to defeat them.

You may have heard that the North Carolina “breeder bill” has been defeated. This is one of the locations where the American Rottweiler Club Legislative Committee concentrated efforts in sending correspondence to lawmakers. Of course this bill will be back next year, but for the time being, it has been stopped.

The American Rottweiler Club Board of Directors is currently working on revisions to the American Rottweiler Club Sweepstakes Futurity Judges’ and Mentor qualification requirements, as well as to the Futurity rules themselves. The Futurity rule changes are being developed to reflect the recent vote on the Mandatory Practices revisions, which were passed last month by the membership. Once these are finalized, they will be available on the website and in the next available ARK.

If you have not already begun doing so, please take a look at the Mile High Rottweiler Club’s website as well as the American Rottweiler Club website and start making plans to attend the 2010 National Specialty hosted by Mile High. By all accounts, it is going to be an excellent event.

You will see on the web updates some changes to the CHIC requirements. It came to the Board's attention that CHIC was allowing registries and groups to be used for Rottweilers to obtain CHIC numbers that were never approved by the ARC as parent club. The parent club for each breed sets the parameters for CHIC. As of Friday, CHIC changed the requirements for elbows and hips to accept ONLY OFA for these portions on the CHIC requirements. This reflects the ARC's Mandatory Practices provisions as passed by the membership.

The ARC Secretary, Tina Church, has resigned from that position due to family and personal issues, wholly unrelated to any other reasons. The Board very much enjoyed the time spent working with Tina, and appreciate her efforts during her tenure serving the club. As a result the club is in need of a volunteer to fill the role of Secretary at this time . Anyone interested in this position can email me or call, (713) 557-0807. Again, best wishes to Tina, and thanks.

Again, I want to thank all members who have contacted me through e-mail or calls since my last letter. It is always good talking to and corresponding with members regarding questions or concerns they have. Please keep up the contact with the Board as this website and your direct contact with us are the best ways to stay informed. Until next time, have a good week.

Sincerely,

Jeff Shaver
